Essential Mobile Plant Checks Before Every Shift

A plant fault rarely announces itself at a convenient time. A damaged hose, worn tyre, failed alarm or loose attachment can turn a routine lift, dig or travel movement into a serious incident. Essential mobile plant checks give operators the opportunity to find those issues before the machine enters the work area, not after someone is exposed to the risk.

For construction, earthmoving and industrial businesses, pre-start checks are more than a box to tick. They are a practical control that supports safe operation, helps meet site and manufacturer requirements, and gives supervisors confidence that plant is fit for the work planned that day.

Why essential mobile plant checks matter

Mobile plant operates around people, traffic, excavations, overhead services and changing ground conditions. Excavators, loaders, skid steer loaders, telehandlers, rollers, forklifts and elevated work platforms all have different operating characteristics, but each can cause serious harm when a fault is missed or an operator proceeds without proper inspection.

A pre-start check gives the operator time to assess the machine while it is stationary, clean and easier to inspect. It also establishes whether the operator has the right machine, attachment and safety equipment for the task. This matters when plant has been moved between sites, used by multiple operators or left exposed to harsh weather and rough terrain.

There is no single checklist that suits every item of plant. The manufacturer’s instructions, site traffic management plan, risk assessment and the type of work being undertaken must guide the inspection. A roller working on level pavement presents different risks from an excavator operating near a trench or a telehandler working beside overhead powerlines.

Start with the work area, not just the machine

Before approaching the plant, look at where it will operate. Check for pedestrians, other mobile plant, light vehicles, unstable ground, soft edges, overhead obstructions, underground service markers and restricted visibility. Confirm that the planned travel route, exclusion zones and loading area are suitable for the machine.

This is particularly relevant early in the shift, when conditions may have changed overnight. Rain can soften ground. Deliveries can obstruct access. Other contractors may have altered barricades, stockpiles or traffic routes. A machine in good working order can still be unsafe to operate in an uncontrolled work area.

Operators should also confirm the task requirements. Check the attachment is suitable and approved for the machine, the load is within rated capacity, and any required spotter, dogger or traffic controller is available and briefed. If the job has changed, stop and reassess rather than relying on yesterday’s plan.

Conduct a systematic walk-around inspection

A consistent walk-around reduces the chance of overlooking a critical component. Begin with the machine isolated, parked safely and, where required, with attachments lowered to the ground. Follow the same direction around the plant each time so the inspection becomes a reliable habit.

Look for fluid leaks beneath the machine and around hydraulic lines, cylinders, fittings, filters and hoses. Small leaks can indicate a developing failure, while high-pressure hydraulic leaks create a serious injection injury risk. Check engine oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, fuel and other levels in line with the manufacturer’s requirements. Never open a hot cooling system.

Inspect tyres, wheels, tracks and undercarriage components for damage, excessive wear, loose wheel nuts, debris and correct condition. On tracked plant, check track tension and inspect sprockets, idlers and rollers. On wheeled plant, look for cuts, bulges, exposed cords and signs of low pressure. Tyre failures and undercarriage faults can quickly affect machine stability and steering.

Examine the boom, arm, forks, bucket, quick hitch, lifting points and other attachments for cracks, damaged pins, missing retainers, wear and loose connections. For plant fitted with quick hitches, confirm the attachment is correctly engaged and that all locking mechanisms are secure. Never assume an attachment is locked because it was secure at the end of the previous shift.

Four areas deserve close attention:

  • guards, handrails, steps and non-slip surfaces;
  • mirrors, windows, cameras and visibility aids;
  • fire extinguishers, first aid equipment and emergency exits where fitted; and
  • safety decals, capacity charts and warning labels that must remain legible.

Clean mud, dust and grease from steps, handholds, windows and mirrors before operation. Poor access can lead to slips and falls, while dirty windows and cameras can remove the operator’s view of a person or obstruction in the machine’s path.

Check controls, warning devices and operator protection

Once the external inspection is complete, enter the cab using three points of contact. Adjust the seat, mirrors and controls before starting. Fasten the seatbelt and check that doors, gates and operator restraint systems are functioning correctly.

Start the plant in accordance with the manufacturer’s procedure and allow warning lights and gauges to be checked. Test the service brake, park brake, steering, horn, lights, reversing alarm, indicators, beacons, windscreen wipers and communications equipment as applicable. Test operating controls carefully in a clear area, ensuring attachments respond correctly and safety interlocks function as intended.

For plant with a rollover protective structure or falling object protective structure, inspect the structure for damage, unauthorised modifications or loose mounting points. These systems are designed to protect the operator in a specific event. A bent, cut or altered structure should be assessed before the plant returns to service.

Visibility is a major control on busy worksites. Cameras, mirrors and alarms assist the operator, but they do not replace a planned exclusion zone or effective communication with workers nearby. If visibility remains restricted, use a trained spotter and agreed signals, and stop immediately if communication is lost.

Record defects and take plant out of service when needed

A completed inspection record is evidence that the check occurred, but its real value is in the action that follows. Record faults clearly enough for a supervisor, mechanic or incoming operator to understand what was found. Avoid vague notes such as “machine issue”. State the location, defect and any action taken, for example: “Hydraulic hose on boom cylinder showing abrasion and oil seepage – plant isolated pending repair.”

Not every defect requires the machine to be stood down. A missing decal may be managed differently from ineffective brakes, a damaged seatbelt, fluid leak, faulty reversing alarm or cracked lifting attachment. The decision should follow site procedures, the manufacturer’s guidance and the level of risk. When a safety-critical fault is identified, isolate the plant, attach an out-of-service tag where required and report it without delay.

Operators should never attempt repairs beyond their authority or competency. Improvised fixes, bypassed interlocks and temporary repairs can create greater risk and may affect compliance, insurance and manufacturer requirements. Repairs and adjustments should be carried out by a competent, authorised person, with the plant inspected before it is returned to service.

Make checks part of competent operation

A pre-start checklist is only effective when the person completing it understands what they are looking at and why it matters. New operators may need support to recognise hydraulic damage, attachment wear, stability issues or the warning signs of a developing mechanical fault. Experienced operators also benefit from refresher training and verification of competency when equipment, work conditions or responsibilities change.

Employers should provide plant-specific procedures, current maintenance arrangements and adequate time at the start of the shift to complete inspections properly. Rushing operators straight into production sends the wrong message. A short, structured check can prevent downtime, equipment damage and injuries that cost far more than a few minutes.
